I am an IT Manager /professional and want
to know a bit more about the technical side of SME
Backup?
(If you are not technical, or do not have
a reasonable understanding of the internet, secure
servers, ISP's, Compression and Encryption etc. please
do not read on but try our "Explained
In English" page)
Additional and more detailed technical details can
be found here.
How does the client software work?
The client software running on your local computer,
notebook and/or server manages the system. It has
all the features of a normal backup up system including
encryption, compression and other related tools. The
client software supports multiple backup data sets
and each can be configured independently from the
others allowing, for example, different schedules,
retention and encryption policies.
The system will, as normally configured, do a full
backup on the first run. You can backup to a local
device and send to us to mount on the server (seeding)
if the backup volume is large. Subsequent backups
are generally incremental thus only sending changed
and new files keeping the band width and time requirements
down.
The connection to the server is via secure (https)
link and the servers have all unnecessary ports locked
down. You can also access and manage your settings
via the server control panel, also via secure link,
allowing remote access, management and restores to
be carried out from any web enabled systems.
Our server configuration is based on dual core Xeon
servers managing and controlling the service with
RAID 5 NAS servers storing the backup data. The NAS
servers are all replicated to a second RAID 5 NAS
server on a real time basis.
Our Data Centre
All our servers are located within state of the art
data centres meeting ISO 17799/2 (the international
quality mark for security management)
Power: Our Data Centre is
supplied by 2 independent power supplies supported
by backup generators. Servers are also fitted with
UPS devices ensuring continuous operation during any
power supply and switching problems.
Data: We have two totally
independent upstream feeds to the internet backbone
(Tier 1) ensuring uninterrupted and continuous service.
In addition we have a direct 100mb link to an alternative
data centre equally equipped. Although slower, this
fail over connection ensures we are always there to
receive your backup files.
Security: Our servers and
communications are protected by Secure Certificates
from Thawte.
Encryption
Several encryption methods are available, full details
are in the help files and support section of this
web site, including AES, TripleDES and TwoFish.
