I am not particularly technical but want
to try and understand how SME Backup works?
(If you are technical or an IT professional you
may prefer to get the information you need from our Technical
page or look at the Knowledge
Base in the Support Portal and other support resources).
How does SME Backup work?
You download a file from the internet and install
it on your computer or server. This software controls
the backup process by:
- storing lists of the files to be backed up (Datasets)
- scheduling backups ensuring your backup is done
as required (normally every day)
- monitoring the files to be backed up and, when
scheduled or run manually, it compiles a list of
the files that have been added, amended or deleted
since the last backup.
- compressing the files to be backed up (to save
storage space, reduce amount of data to transmit
and speed up the service).
- encrypting the data so that no one, without the
encryption key, can recover and read your data.
- transmitting the compressed and encrypted data
using a secure connection to our backup servers.
How do we store the backup files?
We run a number of servers located in a purpose built
secure Data Centre. Some servers manage the system
and when you log in they check your login credentials
and generally administer the service. Other servers,
with TeraBytes of storage, store the encrypted and
compressed files you send us. These files are then
replicated in real time onto other terabyte servers
ensuring that we have a backup of your backup.
How secure is the data and data centre?
The data is encrypted on your own computer before
leaving your own system using state of the art encryption
algorithms. The transfer to the server is over a secure
link (https) from your system to our servers.
The data centre is state of the art and has 2 independent
power supplies and a backup generator. All servers
are fitted with UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supplies),
or battery back up for the non technical, as well.
We have 2 Tier 1 (right on the internet backbone)
communication links provided by 2 completely different
sources; this offers duplication and ensures continuity
of service. A 3rd, slower, fall back link, should
both the primary ones fail at the same time, is also
available. The Data Centre is equipped with state
of the art environmental systems and controls and
access is strictly limited to approved personnel.
Should a problem occur we have a SMS (text) messaging
system that will report any fault to the support engineers
who will respond as quickly as possible, day or night.
